There are many brainstorming routines and other techniques for creating new business ideas. You’ll find just one of them here, but it’s a good one.

New Business Ideas By Turning Things Upside Down
This is a technique for generating truly creative new ideas. It’s based on the way your mind tries to make sense of whatever you put in front of it. What you will put in front of it is ideas and approaches that have been turned on their head.

For example, if you have a bookstore, you can start by making a list of how things are currently done. Add to that any assumptions and any plans you may have considered. Write all of this down, and then look at each item, to create an opposite or upside down idea. Play with that for a couple minutes to see what ideas it suggests.

On your list you might have the fact that “people come to the store to buy books.” You formulate an opposite idea, like “the books come to the customers,” and play with it. Selling online and mailing books is done already by large vendors, and may or may not work with a local bookstore.

But then it occurs to you that local delivery might be as cheap as a dollar per book if you had enough sales each week and ran a delivery route three times weekly. Customers could get the books even faster than they would from the usual online sellers, and can return them locally if necessary, without the need to repackage them. Not an entirely new business idea, but a possibly workable innovation.

Other items that might be on your list: “We can buy comfortable chairs and lamps so customers can relax,” “People buy books to read,” “We sell books,” and so on. It may seem silly to write down some of these self-evident facts, and some of the opposite ideas they suggest will seem even sillier. But it’s a powerful way to get out of the box with you thinking and start generating new business ideas.

“Buy chairs and lamps,” becomes “Sell chairs and lamps.” Silly? Not necessarily. You might generate a decent extra income selling things readers would like. “We sell books,” becomes “We buy books,” which suggests several possibilities as I write this.

Buying used books, but paying only with credit could keep customers coming back and supply a secondary used book store. Not a new idea, but it may be new to your business. Or how about offering to display any self-publisher’s books on consignment. No investment except space, and these writers will be sending family and friends to your store to buy their books.

Turn “People buy books to read” on its head and you get the seemingly crazy, “People read books to buy.” Where could you go with that? As mentioned, our minds try to make sense of things no matter how illogical they seem at first. My mind quickly invented a book that was interesting enough for a reader to read, but also promoted a dozen other books carried by the store. It could be sold cheap or given as a prize.

People read and then buy something more. “Read to buy,” may not be so crazy after all. Why not try turning things upside down for new business ideas?

Think your business idea is sillier than Silly Putty? These days, I think it’s safe to say David Ogilvy’s contention that “it only takes a big idea to attract the attention of consumers” no longer applies. The proof, my friends, is in the seemingly silly ideas that have managed to make these entrepreneurs extremely wealthy. 

Christie Rein. In 2004, Christie Rein was over carrying her baby’s diapers around in a freezer bag. So, the 34-year-old mother decided to do something about it. She and her husband designed a custom diaper bag that was big enough to hold a travel pack of wipes and up to four diapers. Fast forward to two years later, Christie’s company, Diapees & Wipees, now has 120 boutiques across the globe selling bags in 22 different styles.

Gary Dahl. In 1975, Gary Dahl, a California advertising executive, wanted a pet, but didn’t want the expense, effort, and regular maintenance that came along with it. The pet rock was born! After Gary launched the idea into the marketplace, it didn’t take long (six months to be exact) for him to achieve multi-millionaire status. The pet rock sold for $3.95 a pop, and Dahl amazingly sold over 5 million of these little guys. Add to that, each rock was purchased for only a few pennies on the dollar, and the packaging cost him under 30 cents per rock. That means Dahl was profiting 3 dollars a rock–and I’m not talking about the kind of rock that is a girl’s best friend here.  

Xavier Roberts. Another phenomenon kicked off in 1983, when designer Xavier Roberts introduced the world to Cabbage Patch Kids. Rewind to 1976, a 21-year old art student, Xavier rediscovers “needle molding” – a German technique for fabric sculpture from the early 1800’s. While working his way through school as the manager of the Unicoi Craft Shop in Helen, Georgia, Xavier conceives the idea of “adoptable little people” with birth certificates. Xavier next wins a first place ribbon for his “little people” at the 1978 Osceola Art Show in Kissimmee, Florida.

When he returns to Georgia, he and five school friends create Original Appalachian Artworks, Inc., and renovate the L.G. Neal Clinic, a medical facility in Cleveland; where the fab five next opened “BabyLand General® Hospital” to the public. In 1982, Original Appalachian Artworks signs a long-term licensing agreement allowing a major toy manufacturer to produce a replica of “little people.” And the rest is Cabbage Patch history! The Cabbage Patch craze made Xavier a billionaire and it made America’s Mom’s go mad to get their hands on one. Time Magazine wrote an interesting article about one of the strangest crazes in American history.

Mario Lavandeira. Then we come to PerezHilton.com. What can I say? Celebrity Gossip Queen and full-time blogger Mario Lavandeira is building his empire one celebrity mug shot at a time. Here’s how his blog works: he gets a flattering and sometimes, not so flattering pictures of celebrities, he posts those pictures to his website, and then writes nasty things about them. Quite a business model, don’t you think? Although his blog isn’t winning him any fans in Hollywood, it is winning him his own television show, countless media appearances, and tons more traffic than most blogs in the universe.

But wait–there is one more silly business idea to discuss–yours!   

Our history is filled with lots of business ideas that should have worked, and didn’t. On the flipside, there are plenty of ideas that shouldn’t have worked, but did. Now I’m not saying that every idea you scribble down is worth taking all the way to the mat–but what I am saying is–never underestimate the potential of your idea. If you feel:

  • Your idea fits a legitimate market need that you can prove through research
  • Your idea is unique and that you can bring it to life better than anyone else can (this includes your competition)
  • Has a target market that would eat your idea alive
  • Would require a fairly low overhead, making your return on investment high
  • You have a firm grasp on the financial metrics involved
  • You have welcomed all feedback on your idea and are dedicated to continually improving and refining it 

Then GO FOR IT, no matter how silly others might think it is–and don’t ever look back!

How Wikipedia Can Make Money

Wikipedia is a free to use, free to edit online encyclopedia. This is a not-for-profit organization and so does not make money commercially from the website. The website is wholly made by the readers,since anybody can edit the pages. Though vandalism has been an issue, it has been minor considering the fact that thanks to sensible additions, Wikipedia today has millions of pages catering to almost all possible topics in more than 123 languages. This has made it the primary reference to the readers who search the internet for information.

This article discusses some possible ways by which Wikipedia can probably try to monetize. Managing such a large website is not only a Himalayan task for the organization, but also a moral responsibility as the selfless work of millions of its users have also gone into it.

The first possible avenue is what most webmasters naturally take; that of advertisements. One issue that can pop up with this avenue is that users might feel their hardwork is being used for profit by a select few at the helm. Wikipedia can resolve this by counting the value of the contributors by the number of hits their new page has garnered, or how the relevancy of their edition on an existing page is treated in the discussions page. Wikipedia certainly has great people to devise a method, should such an idea be infact mooted.

The third is a modification of its existing Donation method. Wikipedia can use the donations rather as an investment. And this be used by Wikipedia to build the site and monetize through the other methods. And the donators be fittingly rewarded by a corresponding percentage through which the site has infact grown. Say, the ‘donator’ contributes $100. And Wikipedia makes a 20 percent growth. Pay 15 percent dividend to the ‘donator’. Let Wikipedia keep the remaining 5 percent to itself. This will keep everyone in the circle happy.

All being said and done, Wikipedia has done amazingly well in its growth as a free non-profit website. Those who first mooted the idea would be happy to remain so. This article was only for the lesser human beings like you and me.
