How To Have New Business Ideas

2009/03/08 at 11:06 am (Article)

There are many brainstorming routines and other techniques for creating new business ideas. You’ll find just one of them here, but it’s a good one.

New Business Ideas By Turning Things Upside Down
This is a technique for generating truly creative new ideas. It’s based on the way your mind tries to make sense of whatever you put in front of it. What you will put in front of it is ideas and approaches that have been turned on their head.

For example, if you have a bookstore, you can start by making a list of how things are currently done. Add to that any assumptions and any plans you may have considered. Write all of this down, and then look at each item, to create an opposite or upside down idea. Play with that for a couple minutes to see what ideas it suggests.

On your list you might have the fact that “people come to the store to buy books.” You formulate an opposite idea, like “the books come to the customers,” and play with it. Selling online and mailing books is done already by large vendors, and may or may not work with a local bookstore.

But then it occurs to you that local delivery might be as cheap as a dollar per book if you had enough sales each week and ran a delivery route three times weekly. Customers could get the books even faster than they would from the usual online sellers, and can return them locally if necessary, without the need to repackage them. Not an entirely new business idea, but a possibly workable innovation.

Other items that might be on your list: “We can buy comfortable chairs and lamps so customers can relax,” “People buy books to read,” “We sell books,” and so on. It may seem silly to write down some of these self-evident facts, and some of the opposite ideas they suggest will seem even sillier. But it’s a powerful way to get out of the box with you thinking and start generating new business ideas.

“Buy chairs and lamps,” becomes “Sell chairs and lamps.” Silly? Not necessarily. You might generate a decent extra income selling things readers would like. “We sell books,” becomes “We buy books,” which suggests several possibilities as I write this.

Buying used books, but paying only with credit could keep customers coming back and supply a secondary used book store. Not a new idea, but it may be new to your business. Or how about offering to display any self-publisher’s books on consignment. No investment except space, and these writers will be sending family and friends to your store to buy their books.

Turn “People buy books to read” on its head and you get the seemingly crazy, “People read books to buy.” Where could you go with that? As mentioned, our minds try to make sense of things no matter how illogical they seem at first. My mind quickly invented a book that was interesting enough for a reader to read, but also promoted a dozen other books carried by the store. It could be sold cheap or given as a prize.

People read and then buy something more. “Read to buy,” may not be so crazy after all. Why not try turning things upside down for new business ideas?

Your Silly Business Idea Could Be Worth Millions

2009/03/08 at 11:02 am (Article)

Think your business idea is sillier than Silly Putty? These days, I think it’s safe to say David Ogilvy’s contention that “it only takes a big idea to attract the attention of consumers” no longer applies. The proof, my friends, is in the seemingly silly ideas that have managed to make these entrepreneurs extremely wealthy.

Christie Rein. In 2004, Christie Rein was over carrying her baby’s diapers around in a freezer bag. So, the 34-year-old mother decided to do something about it. She and her husband designed a custom diaper bag that was big enough to hold a travel pack of wipes and up to four diapers. Fast forward to two years later, Christie’s company, Diapees & Wipees, now has 120 boutiques across the globe selling bags in 22 different styles.

Gary Dahl. In 1975, Gary Dahl, a California advertising executive, wanted a pet, but didn’t want the expense, effort, and regular maintenance that came along with it. The pet rock was born! After Gary launched the idea into the marketplace, it didn’t take long (six months to be exact) for him to achieve multi-millionaire status. The pet rock sold for $3.95 a pop, and Dahl amazingly sold over 5 million of these little guys. Add to that, each rock was purchased for only a few pennies on the dollar, and the packaging cost him under 30 cents per rock. That means Dahl was profiting 3 dollars a rock–and I’m not talking about the kind of rock that is a girl’s best friend here.

Xavier Roberts. Another phenomenon kicked off in 1983, when designer Xavier Roberts introduced the world to Cabbage Patch Kids. Rewind to 1976, a 21-year old art student, Xavier rediscovers “needle molding” – a German technique for fabric sculpture from the early 1800’s. While working his way through school as the manager of the Unicoi Craft Shop in Helen, Georgia, Xavier conceives the idea of “adoptable little people” with birth certificates. Xavier next wins a first place ribbon for his “little people” at the 1978 Osceola Art Show in Kissimmee, Florida.

When he returns to Georgia, he and five school friends create Original Appalachian Artworks, Inc., and renovate the L.G. Neal Clinic, a medical facility in Cleveland; where the fab five next opened “BabyLand General® Hospital” to the public. In 1982, Original Appalachian Artworks signs a long-term licensing agreement allowing a major toy manufacturer to produce a replica of “little people.” And the rest is Cabbage Patch history! The Cabbage Patch craze made Xavier a billionaire and it made America’s Mom’s go mad to get their hands on one. Time Magazine wrote an interesting article about one of the strangest crazes in American history.

Mario Lavandeira. Then we come to What can I say? Celebrity Gossip Queen and full-time blogger Mario Lavandeira is building his empire one celebrity mug shot at a time. Here’s how his blog works: he gets a flattering and sometimes, not so flattering pictures of celebrities, he posts those pictures to his website, and then writes nasty things about them. Quite a business model, don’t you think? Although his blog isn’t winning him any fans in Hollywood, it is winning him his own television show, countless media appearances, and tons more traffic than most blogs in the universe.

But wait–there is one more silly business idea to discuss–yours!

Our history is filled with lots of business ideas that should have worked, and didn’t. On the flipside, there are plenty of ideas that shouldn’t have worked, but did. Now I’m not saying that every idea you scribble down is worth taking all the way to the mat–but what I am saying is–never underestimate the potential of your idea. If you feel:

  • Your idea fits a legitimate market need that you can prove through research
  • Your idea is unique and that you can bring it to life better than anyone else can (this includes your competition)
  • Has a target market that would eat your idea alive
  • Would require a fairly low overhead, making your return on investment high
  • You have a firm grasp on the financial metrics involved
  • You have welcomed all feedback on your idea and are dedicated to continually improving and refining it

Then GO FOR IT, no matter how silly others might think it is–and don’t ever look back!

How Wikipedia Can Make Money

2009/03/08 at 10:47 am (Article)

Wikipedia is a free to use, free to edit online encyclopedia. This is a not-for-profit organization and so does not make money commercially from the website. The website is wholly made by the readers, since anybody can edit the pages. Though vandalism has been an issue, it has been minor considering the fact that thanks to sensible additions, Wikipedia today has millions of pages catering to almost all possible topics in more than 123 languages. This has made it the primary reference to the readers who search the internet for information.

This article discusses some possible ways by which Wikipedia can probably try to monetize. Managing such a large website is not only a Himalayan task for the organization, but also a moral responsibility as the selfless work of millions of its users have also gone into it.

The first possible avenue is what most webmasters naturally take; that of advertisements. Wikipedia could possibly take the services of Google to let its advertisers to display their advertisements on Wikipedia. Wikipedia could certainly be considered a special publisher since the Adwords campaigns could certainly expect an increase in the bid amounts for clicks. This is because, Wikipedia easily outnumbers most of the Adsense publishers in the number of impressions that their webpages receive.Hence the advertisers would certainly relish their advertisements being shown on Wikipedia.

Wikipedia can discard this idea if it feels showing advertisements can feel the users less satisfied.

The second possible avenue is analog publishing. Just like Encyclopedia Brittanica, Wikipedia can expect to publish their collections in a book format. Wikipedia content keeps changing massively with every passing day. So, publishing yearly editions could also help Wikipedia fanatics to keep track of how much their site has grown through the period.

One issue that can pop up with this avenue is that users might feel their hardwork is being used for profit by a select few at the helm. Wikipedia can resolve this by counting the value of the contributors by the number of hits their new page has garnered, or how the relevancy of their edition on an existing page is treated in the discussions page. Wikipedia certainly has great people to devise a method, should such an idea be infact mooted.

The third is a modification of its existing Donation method. Wikipedia can use the donations rather as an investment. And this be used by Wikipedia to build the site and monetize through the other methods. And the donators be fittingly rewarded by a corresponding percentage through which the site has infact grown. Say, the ‘donator’ contributes $100. And Wikipedia makes a 20 percent growth. Pay 15 percent dividend to the ‘donator’. Let Wikipedia keep the remaining 5 percent to itself. This will keep everyone in the circle happy.

All being said and done, Wikipedia has done amazingly well in its growth as a free non-profit website. Those who first mooted the idea would be happy to remain so. This article was only for the lesser human beings like you and me.

Ten Good Ways To Get More Web Traffic

2009/03/08 at 9:19 am (Article)

In order to succeed in your Home Internet Business, attracting website traffic and more importantly sustaining it has to be one of your key business strategies. Needless to say, there are many ways to increase website traffic. You do need to uncover the best strategies of learning how to tap this traffic, hopefully a growing one at that, perhaps self-replicating stream and most importantly it should be free. This article provides some good ideas to increase blog traffic too.

(1)Search Engine Ranking

It is important for your Home Internet Business to ensure that your website is search engine friendly as this will certainly help grow your website traffic. Do ensure all the meta and alt tags are completed and there is a H1 header, optimizing the text for your chosen keywords. There are a number of sites which provide a “spider simulation” which shows you what your site looks like to a spider and what you can do to improve its search engine rankingon the quality of your website is generated for your view and to take necessary steps for improvements.

(2) Directories

Directories are website listings and there are many to choose from. A good method to choose a reputable one would be to look for directories that have a good traffic rating, one that receives significant high volumes of website traffic (use Alexa). A few good examples to start this would be Yahoo and DMOZ.

(3) Traffic Exchanges

Every website you view in a traffic exchange generates credits which are exchanged for views of your own site. Most Traffic Exchanges are free to join and they generate traffic for you almost instantly. There are basically two types of exchanges, manual surf and auto surf. The manual surf exchanges are preferred as they require the person to view and click the sites. The more sites you view the more people visit your website and the more your website traffic grows. To increase web traffic even further, join a few of them so as to generate more visitors, which can help in your page ranking too.

(4) Article Writing.

One of the most time consuming but effective methods of increasing search engine traffic. Most of these article directories offer this service free. Ensure that your article is optimized for keywords and that you include your website url bio line at the bottom of the article before you submit. Ezines, Magazines, Business Blogs, and webmasters are always on the lookout for good content to include in their articles as they are also in the quest for better search engine ranking. This method is very effective in getting one-way back links to your site.

(5) Blogs

There are more than 10 blog platforms to choose from. High on this list are word press and blogspot. Ensure your blog is located on your site, and check that it links to your key pages and that you ping each time your blog is updated. Search engines favor sites with frequently changing, unique content so you will need to provide regular updates to your blog. A regularly updated blog will attract readers which in turn builds and increases website traffic.

(6) Forum Marketing

Join a few good forums so that you can leave your URL in them. This will increase traffic in two ways. Firstly, people who read your posts are likely to click the link to checkout your site. Secondly search engines will generally accept the link which adds up to your link popularity. Another benefit of joining these forums is also to learn from other experienced and successful marketers. You’ll be surprised at their willingness to share their knowledge with you.

(7) Viral Advertising

If you have an idea and you tell 10 people and they each tell 10 people and so on, by the time the idea goes through 10 levels it has been passed on to a million people. You can use this similar principle as your business marketing strategy too. If you produced a free report or ebook filled with links back to your site and gave it away, the chances are those you gave it away to would do the same thing. Your links would then multiply significantly over the Internet giving a viral effect and your website traffic will grow.

(8) Reciprocal Links

They are also called link exchange and link swapping. Webmasters hope that people will click on their link in other websites thereby generating website traffic. However, be selective in who you do reciprocal links with. Always ensure that your link partner is relevant to your business niche and preferably has good Page Ranking. This strategy is one of the very best ways of generating free, targeted website trafficalso is highly rated by search engines

(9) Classified Ads

Way before the web came along, if you wanted to advertise you would turn to the newspaper “classified” section. Classified ads didn’t die with the web, they just went online. One of the most popular classified sites is This can be a powerful tool for getting search engines to notice your site and send you traffic.

(10) PPC Marketing

PPC stands for “Pay Per Click” and is very effective in bringing traffic to the website you are promoting. Google’s Adwords program is one of the most successful PPC engines. Essentially, you purchase ads from Google by writing an ad and bidding on keywords to determine how much you will pay when someone clicks your ad. This is a good and powerful tool to advertise your product or webpage to millions of people who access the Internet at very low bid.

10 Ways I’ve Done To Increase Page Views To My Business Blog

2009/03/08 at 9:13 am (Article)

1. Well Written and Unique Blog Content

It’s funny how what you’ve been preaching to others about ‘content is king’ comes back in a full circle. Well believe it or not, nothing is more important than writing unique and interesting content on your blog. Anyone can write a post about any topic, but to present it in a well written good unique writing style takes some effort, practice and skill to get the job done nicely.

2. Use keywords On Your Blog Post

Keyword ranking or keywording is one of the best ways to get more page views on your blog. Write contents with your keywords you are ranking in the search engines. It takes both practice and skill to master the art of keywording but over time, will help increase page views enroute to gaining top search engine ranking.

3. Favorite Posts

Put your favorite blog post links on your blog homepage. If your blog theme does not show them, there a many WordPress plugins which can do this. It’s a good way to showcase some of your best work to make an impression.

4. Related Posts

Install a WordPress plugin for ‘Related Posts’ which will show some of your older posts relevant to the post you’ve just published.  That’s a sure way of keeping the visitor much longer on your blog and at the same time providing the information he has searched for.

5. Make It Simple and Easy To read

Make your blog simple to read. So this means your font size you used and the color combination used on your blog play an important aspect of attracting more visitors and ultimately increasing your page views. It’s good to use bullet points, bold text and short paragraphs on your posts as they help to present quick summaries that your readers can understand what you are trying to say.

6. Use Headers On Posts

The proper use of headers including h1, h2 helps to convey the key points of your post. Very often your visitors just skimp through your post to find something interesting. They read your headers to determine  what your post is all about and if it’s interesting enough to read more. Here is a post I came across on the use of headers, which shows just how much you may be missing if you don’t use headers. As an added SEO advantage, search engines love headers too as they tell exactly what kind of content to expect.

7. Change your WordPress Blog Theme

Changing your blog theme can help to increase your page views on your blog sometimes quite drastically depending on the circumstances. Wouldn’t you like to wow your visitors to your blog with an impressive blog theme with good header or logo?  Or is it enough just with good contents on your blog?  While good content as mentioned is important, the visual impact instantly gives that added edge and projects a good image to your first time visitors. After all first impression lasts forever.

8. Include Deep Links On Every Post

Try to include deep links on every post you write. These are internal links to your older posts which are relevant to your post. For someone who is keen in your topic or if your topic provides the information your visitor is searching for, you can be sure that he will want to read it.

9. Optimize your images

You may have noticed I like to put up a picture on each of my posts. Apart from enhancing the look of this blog, more importantly it’s also to give a little boost to SEO on this blog and getting some traffic and more page views too. reports that 25% of searches actually queried are not of web pages but images. But needless to say, your images must be optimized with your keywords you are ranking for in search engines.

10. Write About Current Events

You can be sure that when you write about current events, many people are going to be interested in what you’ve got to say, especially those that affect them. The key is not just write the news event, but rather write the event and relate to a specific goal, or objective of your blog or a lesson to learn for your home business.

Final Thoughts

As a blogger, your job is actually to make sure your blog becomes the best blog there is on this blogosphere. Getting traffic and top search engine ranking are top priorities but you simply can’t make this happen without taking the first step – increasing your page views.

How To Start A Great Internet Home Business

2009/03/08 at 8:25 am (Article)

Many people realize the potential for starting a Internet home business using a web site but few people know how to go about it and most people who make an attempt do it incorrectly. Using a web designer and marketing expert is extremely expensive and not needed. If someone has a little time to devote they can be one of the top three percent of successful web site businesses on the net.

Web design skills are no longer needed to start a business using a web site.
Great web designers still have their place in E-commerce but for the average
small business a beautiful and flashy site is not needed and counter
productive. Most web site hosting companies provide templates and push button tools which can have a neat and professional unique looking site designed in a couple hours. This is the first step to starting an Internet home business online.

Picking out a domain name is also important. Most beginner marketers try to be to flashy and think creating some funky name will bring business. Let’s be clear, it will not in anyway help unless one has a lot of expendable income to devote towards a brand name marketing campaign. For the average person trying to get a small online business up and running the domain name is of little importance. What is important is to make sure and get the site theme and keywords into the name.

Search engines give a little extra weight to the keyword in the domain name and it will get the site off and running. By using the broadest but most profitable keyword in the domain name declares the theme of the site for the search engines. If a person is creating a site on the theme of “hotels” and the best keyword to use for the homepage is “inexpensive hotels”, then try to give the domain name for the site something like timsinexpensivehotelsguide. This will give a clear theme to the site and make the Internet home business destined to succeed.

When coming up with a Internet home business idea make sure to keep the focus on theme and make sure that it is a theme which one understands and can write about. Try to make sure that there is enthusiasm for the site and it is something the business person enjoys working on. Try to narrow the site ideas down into a well thought out outline which many topics and pages can be created. Start with a broader idea for the overall site idea and then break it down into sections which the site will cover.

A broad site idea may be “A Miami Travel Guide” and the sections of the site
may be where to stay in Miami, timeshares, condos and so forth. Then another section can be “where to eat in Miami” and content can be focused on restaurants, diners and bars.

The way to draw profits for an Internet home business can be taken advantage of in a number of different ways once the site theme and layout has been constructed properly.  Income producing ways to sell “Miami” related products, books and services can be placed on the pages. Looking for local restaurants, hotels and businesses to advertise on the site should be taken into consideration as well.

The limitless possibilities for such web sites make an Internet home business a low risk high reward endeavor. Sticking to the basic rules of designing a well thought out site which can draw from multiple revenue streams will set any new business venture up to win. Making sure that the sites topics and content will be built around a subject the person is well educated in and also which provides fun and excitement are a recipe for success online.
